How to make a background transparent

Separate a subject from its background, inspect the edges, and export a PNG that preserves transparency.

Start with the original

Open the transparent background maker and choose a clear photo. Keep the original: background removal can lose small details, and an untouched source lets you try again. A subject that contrasts with its surroundings is easier to inspect than one whose edges blend into the scene.

Inspect the cutout

Check the preview around hair, fingers, handles, and gaps between parts of the subject. A checkerboard indicates transparent areas; it is not a pattern you want baked into the image. Try placing the result over light and dark colors in your editor to reveal leftover halos or missing edges.

Automatic removal is not a guarantee of a perfect mask. If an important detail is missing, use a clearer original or refine the cutout in an image editor. Do not discard your source after the first attempt.

Export without losing transparency

Save a transparent PNG. JPEG has no alpha channel, so it needs a solid background. Renaming a file does not convert it. Reopen the downloaded image in an editor and place it over a colored layer to confirm the background shows through. Check its pixel dimensions before using it in a large layout.
