Transparent background maker
Upload a photo to separate the subject from its background. This page uses the same removal tool as the rest of the site.
Transparency is more than a white background
A transparent image stores how visible each pixel is, including partly visible pixels around soft edges. A white background is still a solid background. A checkerboard preview helps you see the difference, but the checkerboard itself should not become part of the downloaded image.
Use a PNG when you need to place the subject over another design. JPEG cannot preserve transparency. Renaming a JPEG to PNG changes neither the file format nor the background: the subject has to be separated first.
Check the edges before you publish
Start with a clear original where the whole subject is visible. Cropped details cannot be recovered by removing the background. Hair, glass, reflective packaging, and low contrast edges may need a closer inspection after automatic removal.
View the result over a dark background and a light one. Look for halos, missing corners, and remaining background between parts of the subject. If the cutout does not work, try another original or finish the edge cleanup in an editor. Do not assume every photo will produce a perfect result.
Keep a reusable master
Save the original and the transparent result separately. Use the transparent copy in layouts, presentations, or a product image composition, and keep the original for future edits. Check the downloaded pixel dimensions against the destination before uploading it.
For product listings, decide whether the image needs transparency or a solid background. A listing may display a transparent image against its own page color. Inspect the actual preview and current image requirements before publishing.
Transparent background maker questions
Does a white background mean the image is transparent?
No. Transparency lets the background underneath show through; white pixels remain white.
Can I save transparency as JPEG?
No. Use PNG for a cutout that needs to remain transparent.
